With this in mind we have many programs that facilitate organisations to understand how your workers discern risk.
We understand that there are more layers than just the physical hazards in a work environment.
We look at the psychological and cultural hazards that are the more common causes of incidents, occurrences and worker dis-engagement.
Our signature risk and safety program is the PROACT program.
The Psychology, Risk, Observation and Culture, Competency, Conversations Program (PROACT). PROACT Program offers a range of modules which target culture, the psychology of risk, hazard identification, safety observations and safety leadership.
Safety and Risk Observations and Conversations Program
The culture and psychology of risk is about the way things are done on site, the key drivers, attitudes, beliefs and perceptions as they determine behaviour and the way in which groups set norms for safety on site.
The program tackles perception, motivation, recognition, sensemaking, mindfulness and personality type and how they all condition the development of hazard and risk assessment. The program is highly interactive, practical and down to earth so that participants leave the training with a new found enthusiasm to engage with others in safety conversations.
Advanced Hazard Identification
This program extends knowledge about physical hazard identification that is included in many traditional safety programs to include:
- Primary Hazard Identification: compliance to physical standards, safety legislation, expectations of regulations and hazard controls.
- Secondary Hazard Identification: the fundamentals of human factors in safety, mindfulness, sensemaking, communications, consequences, dissonance and risk trade off.
- Tertiary Hazard Identification: hidden factors at work, attitudes, values and group dynamics, risk homestasis and organisational interventions.
Participants develop a strong appreciation of the complexity of hazard assessment through this Program. The Program provides field experience opportunity to practice hazard and risk assessment using digital, graphical, cartographical, verbal and written assessments.
Your Talk Matters Program
This program introduces the key issues of cultural language (discourse), artefacts (signage, policy, forms, bureaucracy, systems, visible tools) and embedded attitudes evidenced in how people engage others about risk. The program includes extensive support coaching in situ and support micro training.
Classroom training is then followed up with 1:1 and small group coaching in the field with you and your team because we know that the more practice that people have, the better skills they will develop.
The Your Talk Matters program continues the learning journey (started in Safety Observations and Conversations) about perceptions, culture and risk by tackling the following:
- The essentials of framing and priming language ie. How language and its use triggers thinking and shaping of others thoughts
- Walking the walk, talking the talk are flip sides of the same coin, its not one without the other
- Cheap talk, easy talk, double-speak talk and power talk don’t work to change either attitudes or drive ownership of safety
- Many a poster, message and symbol confuses people and mixed messages breed a destructive sub-culture of scepticism, cynicism, negativity and fatalism
- Being purposeful and planning talk is important, understanding purpose and ethos to be communicated
- Messages can be Gain Framed, Neutral or Loss Framed
- Loss framed messages are generally not successful
- Gain framed messages are most likely to motivate action and ownership
- Messages can be “reframed” for transformation
